TREES AND SHRUBS • April is the best month to plant Conifers and other evergreens. Continue to plant pot grown trees, shrubs and Roses. • Shrubs that produce flowers on this year’s wood can be pruned now. Ask us if you’re in doubt. • Apply a Rose fertilizer now. Other flowering shrubs will also benefit from this high potash feed.
FLOWERS • Continue to sow hardy annuals if the soil is warm and dry on the surface but moist below. • Plant Gladioli at least 6” deep. Plant other summer bulbs, corms and tubers. • Plant new season’s herbaceous perennials. Replace inferior varieties with new improved cultivars.
FRUIT • Now is a good time to plant Strawberries. Continue to plant tree and bush fruit. • Spray fruit to guard against pests and diseases.
VEGETABLES • Sow seed of Beetroot, Summer and Autumn Cabbage, Autumn Cauliflower, Lettuce, Onions, Parsnip, Pea, Spinach and Turnip. • Plant out Second Early and Maincrop Potatoes, Lettuce, Cauliflowers, Cabbage, Broccoli, Brussels Sprouts and Onion Sets.
LAWNS • Sow grass seed to make new lawns or to patch up bare areas. • Apply a weed and feed to enhance the lawn. Cut the grass when the weather is mild.
GREENHOUSE • Complete sowings of summer bedding plants. French and African Marigolds and Zinnias are quick for seed to flower. • Prick out seedlings into trays of good potting compost. • Sow seeds of Melons, Cucumbers, Aubergines, and Peppers or buy in young plants late this month. • Sow seeds of Celery, Outdoor Tomato, Courgette, Runner and French Beans to plant out next month.
HOUSEPLANTS • Step up watering and feeding now but don’t swamp your plants. • Watch out for greenfly and red spider mites and treat with insecticide. • Move pot bound plants into larger pots.
DON’T FORGET • Look out for pests and diseases and control them early. • Water newly planted evergreens and mulch with peat or bark.
